What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand mentioned and recommended in the answers AI assistants give. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best tool for project management?" and it names three brands, AEO is the work that decides whether yours is one of them.

The answer is the new front page

Almost my whole career has been in B2B marketing, nearly all of it at one software company where I was one of the owners and ran the marketing. I tried it all. Word of mouth, tradeshows, SEO, ads, email lists, every new channel as it came along. Rank on Google has always been a top priority. The first page was where buyers looked after everything else.

What changed for me, and only recently, came from a realization in my personal life. My wife and I just had a baby, and I asked AI to find the best car seat, then the best stroller, then to compare them. There are hundreds of each on the market and I had no time to sort through them all myself. I still did my own research, but the starting point was an AI assistant, and it was actually pretty helpful. Somewhere in there I realized if I'm starting here, so are others, especially the tech-forward ones.

There's a shift. A growing share of product research now starts by asking AI. People ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and Perplexity "what's the best X for Y," and they act on the answer, sometimes before they ever open a search engine. AI doesn't return ten links. It returns an answer, and that answer names a short list of brands. Of the hundreds of strollers, I got maybe five results back.

That short list is the new front page. If your brand isn't on it, you're not in the conversation, and most companies have no idea if they are or not. It's not even likely they're thinking about it.

AEO vs SEO, the short version

AEO is to AI answers what SEO is to search results.

  • SEO is about ranking in a list of links on a search engine.
  • AEO is about being named, and named favorably, inside an AI's generated answer.

They're related but not the same. Different signals drive each one, and a strong search ranking doesn't guarantee the AI will mention you. AEO is a separate channel that needs its own measurement. (More on the differences in our piece on AEO vs SEO.)

What drives an AI recommendation

AI answers aren't random. They reflect who has the strongest, clearest presence across the sources the models read. A few things matter most:

  • Mention rate. How often the AI names you at all for your market's questions.
  • Sentiment. Whether it describes you positively, neutrally, or negatively when it does.
  • Position. Whether you're the first name in the answer or an afterthought.
  • Consistency. Whether you show up across different engines, only one, or none.
  • Cited sources. Many engines pull from and cite specific pages. Being well represented on the sources an AI trusts for your market is a big part of getting recommended.

You can influence all of these but only if you can see them.

How to start with AEO

1. Find your real buying questions. Not your branded terms, the questions a buyer actually types: "best tool for...", "alternatives to...", "how do I..." 2. Ask them across the major engines. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and Perplexity can give different answers. Check more than one. 3. Write down whether you're mentioned, how, and who's mentioned instead of you. That last part is a wake-up call for most people. 4. Improve the sources AI cites for your category. Then re-check over time. AEO isn't a one-time audit. Visibility drifts, and the value is in tracking it.

Step 2 and 3 are tedious. Doing this by hand across the major assistants regularly, and keeping a record you can compare over time, is a huge chore.

Where AnswerScout fits

We built AnswerScout to make AEO measurable without it becoming a second job. It asks your buying questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and Perplexity every day, scores your visibility from 0 to 100 with the breakdown behind it, finds the competitors AI recommends instead of you, and gives you a ranked list of what to change. If you're weighing options, here's how AnswerScout compares to Profound, the most-cited name in the category.

If you want to see where you stand in AI answers, you can start a 5-day free trial, no credit card required, at answerscout.ai. You can also see how it works first.
